Arid Environments​

Arid environments, or deserts, make up a third of Earth’s landmass and are important to Earth’s climate and biosphere. I study Earth’s arid environments as a way to better understand how life adapts to severe water shortage. Using this knowledge, it is possible to predict how life could exist on a planet outside Earth, like Mars.

Exoplanet Habitability​

Does life exist outside our solar system? Many thousands of planets outside our solar system, exoplanets, have been discovered. However, we do not have enough information to determine if life could exist on these planets. I study the possible surface conditions of exoplanets to understand if Earth-like life could survive.

Biosignatures

If life can survive on exoplanets, what would it look like? This is the ultimate question in astrobiology. We know what life on Earth looks like, but life on an exoplanet may look completely different. How can we be sure that we find life? I study how climate affects the distribution of life on Earth, and use that as a roadmap to understand the possibilities on exoplanets.
